Plans for new Methven House progress

Plans for a new Methven House resthome are getting closer and a community fundraising campaign will be launched soon with opportunities for everyone in the district to get involved.

Interviews to identify the best architect to design the new aged care facility have been held and the association will make an appointment next month, says Chairman Colin Lill.

Concept designs will then be drawn up so the community can see what the facility could provide. The new Methven House will be built close to the edge of town on land gifted by the Lochhead Trust at Grace Ireland Drive. The ‘greenfields’ site offers spectacular views as part of Methven’s rural boundary but is still close enough to town so residents can easily access services.

“It’s important we get this project underway as the existing 90 year-old Methven House is rapidly reaching the end of its useable life. While our recent audit for Ministry of Health certification confirmed we are providing an excellent health service and our 95% occupancy rate in the past year provides a comfortable financial situation, the longer term viability of the building is not so rosy. Its age and condition means significant maintenance and heating costs and earthquake strengthening requirements in the future may prevent us operating from there. It’s time to get on and build a new Methven House so we can keep our older members in the community,” says Mr Lill.

Mr Lill says feedback from people in the district since last September’s public meeting when the plans were released has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People are telling us to just get on and do it. By and large locals want to stay here as they age and not have to move to Ashburton or Christchurch if care is needed. They also support the idea of improved facilities such as en-suite and single room options rather than the the older style rooms we currently offer.”

A fundraising campaign to support the design and build of the new Methven House is currently being developed. All money raised will go towards the new facility as the current Methven House operation is self-sustaining.

Fundraising options for all members of the community from preschoolers and school students, businesses and farmers, sporting and community groups through to families with connections to Methven House are being explored. Further information will be released next month with details available on the Methven House Facebook page.
